Maitland City Council is developing our Disability Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP) 2026–2030, to support a more accessible, inclusive and welcoming Maitland for everyone.

We’re partnering with Community Disability Alliance Hunter (CDAH) to hear directly from community members and stakeholders. Engagement will include community workshops, targeted stakeholder sessions, pop-ups across the Maitland LGA, and a collaborative Inclusive Maitland co-design session.

Frequently asked questions

A Disability Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP) is a requirement under the NSW Disability Inclusion Act 2014. It is a strategic plan that explains how Council will improve accessibility and inclusion for people with disability in our community by addressing barriers and creating opportunities for participation. It also encourages everyone in the community to contribute to making Maitland a safer, more welcoming, and inclusive place.

The plan demonstrates Council’s commitment to supporting people with disability and sets out practical actions across four main focus areas:

  • Developing positive attitudes and behaviours
  • Creating liveable and accessible environments
  • Supporting meaningful employment opportunities
  • Improving access to information and services.

By guiding Council’s work in these areas, the DIAP help ensure all residents can fully engage in community life, feel included and have equal opportunities.

As part of this process, the engagement strategy will include:

  • Community consultation workshops – Share your experiences and ideas to help identify barriers and opportunities for inclusion.
  • Pop-up sessions across Maitland – Drop in at a convenient location to have your voice heard in an informal setting.
  • Community co-design ‘Inclusive Maitland’ session – Work with Council to develop practical ideas and solutions for a more inclusive city.
  • Service provider session – Collaborate with local service providers to explore ways services can better support inclusion and accessibility.

Our survey is now open, we'd love to hear from you!

You’re also invited to our first community consultation, taking place on 3 December in celebration of International Day of People with Disability, at the Gillieston Heights Community Hub.
