Walka Water Works Plan of Management on public exhibition
Maitland City Council has reached a significant milestone with Council's endorsement of the Walka Water Works Plan of Management (PoM) for public exhibition, following extensive community consultation to understand local priorities for the future of this iconic site.
The vision, as outlined in the PoM, is for a revitalised open space and community destination combining heritage, nature and wellness. Walka Water Works celebrates its past while offering diverse recreational opportunities, strengthening community connections and enhancing the wellbeing of residents and visitors.
While remediation of the site remains the current priority, the PoM outlines an aspirational delivery model and clear action plan to improve the use and activation of the site, including restoring the buildings for future use and enhancing Walka as a vibrant recreational destination, balancing heritage conservation, environmental protection and community use, subject to future planning processes and approvals.
Public exhibition details
The Walka Water Works Plan of Management is a requirement under the Local Government Act 1993 and the Crown Land Management Act 2016.
The PoM will be on public exhibition until 31 January 2026 with submissions being accepted until 13 February 2026. Follow the link below to have your say on the Walka Water Works Plan of Management.
Background
Reconnecting with Walka Water Works
Walka Water Works is a heritage listed complex set on a reserve of 64 hectares. The former industrial site, owned by Crown Lands, has been managed by Maitland City Council since 2007.
Walka Water Works is a priority hub for the City and a much loved community space. It's time to create a holistic and sustainable plan for the ongoing management of the site for future generations to enjoy.
In 2024, we connected with our community and key stakeholders to hear their vision and ideas for enhanced uses and the site's future.
Design of the site remediation will be undertaken in due course with a development application to be published.
